IBORGS
The iPhone has become a cultural artifact of contemporary society and the iconic iPhone box, with it’s plastic contours that morphed with each new version of the phone, has become the canvas or the womb of my iBorg creations. The word iBorg comes from cyborg, which has been defined as a hypothetical entity consisting of a fusion of organic and mechanical components. In her 1985 essay, Cyborg Manifesto, the feminist and cultural theorist Donna Haraway writes about the cyborg as “remapping the boundaries of identity”, and as being a “new creature in a post-gender world”.
In the footsteps of Haraway’s cyborgs, my iBorgs are born of the same technological advances that more and more infiltrate our lives and alter them forever. Disjointed, humorous, sad or scared, they reflect on my own response to a society that is changing at a dizzying speed and with which I sometimes feel I can hardly keep up. But my iBorgs spin calmly on their music boxes, looking out at the changing world, accepting their fate, being who or what they are. They are my heroes.
